Dr. Miguel E. Marrero - Medina PhD, MPH
Dr. Miguel Marrero is a specialist in mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for Americares' global technical unit. He has been involved in multiple emergency response and recovery processes in Puerto Rico, the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean, including Hurricanes 'Irma' and 'Maria', Hurricane Michael in Florida (2018), the response to the humanitarian crisis of Venezuelan migrants in Colombia (2018-22), earthquakes in Puerto Rico (2020), the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-22), Hurricane Ida in Louisiana - USA (2021), tornadoes in Kentucky, USA (2002), Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico (2023), and providing support from Ukraine and Poland during the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine/Russia (2022-23). He holds an Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA) and a Ph.D. in Psychology with a concentration in cognition and emotions from the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, a Master's in Psycho-Oncology from the Miguel de Cervantes European University in Spain, a Master's in Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in health education and disease prevention from Benedictine University in Chicago, USA, and a Master's in Counseling Psychology from UAGM in Puerto Rico. Additionally, he holds a Graduate Certificate in 'Global Mental Health: Trauma & Recovery' from Harvard Medical School (Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma). He has worked in the field of mental health, psychosocial support, and public health as a graduate-level academic and consultant, as well as for various government agencies, such as the Puerto Rico Family Department, The PR Department of Health, and ASSMCA during critical moments such as the Zika epidemic in 2016 and the response to Hurricanes 'Irma' and 'Maria' in 2017. Dr. Marrero has served as President of the Puerto Rico Public Health Association, a board member of the Alliance of Public Health Associations of the Americas, and currently serves on the Committee of experts in mental health and behavioral health in disasters, of the Puerto Rico Department of Health's Biosecurity Office. Additionally, he serves as a faculty member in the Public Health program at the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Caguas, Puerto Rico, as well as in the psychology and social sciences programs at the University of Puerto Rico's campuses in Rio Piedras and Carolina, respectively.
